SUMMARY OF SWTH TESTING

LOT SIZES and SAMPLE SIZES
SWTH capacitors are normally produced in lots of 1200, of which approximately 1100 are available for shipment.

Sample sizes vary with the test being performed. The 1000hr. life test requires 80 capacitors. The remaining tests are performed on either 6 or 12 capacitors. Capacitors that have undergone destructive testing (including environmental testing, surge testing, vibration, shock and lifetesting) are discarded following the test.

VOLTAGE SURGE TEST
Six parts from each lot are heated to 85°C in a test oven. They are rapidly charged to 115% of rated voltage and held for 30 sec., followed by rapid discharge. Test is complete after 1000 cycles (16.7hrs.) Parts must meet initial standards.

VIBRATION TEST, MIL STD 202, Method 204,B
Twelve parts from each lot are mounted on a vibration test fixture, all in the same orientation. Vibration frequency is set to sweep from 10 Hz to 2KHz and back continuously. Fixture is adjusted to deliver 15g force or .06" travel under 80 Hz. Parts are tested in each of 3 orientations for 4 hrs. each. ESR and capacitance are monitored during final 1/2 hour. Modulation must not exceed 1% of reading.

MOISTURE RESISTANCE, MIL STD 202, Meth 106
Six parts per lot are mounted in an environmental chamber. Chamber is set for near 100% RH, temperature is cycled between 70°C for 5.5 hrs. and room temperature for 2.5 hrs. Cycle is repeated for 10 days. The capacitors are placed in freezer set for -1O°C for 3 hrs, 5 times during the test period. At conclusion of test, capacitance, ESR and DCL must be within initial limits.

CORROSION RESISTANCE, MIL STD 202, Meth 204,B
Twelve parts from each lot are placed in an environmental chamber. Chamber is set to 35°C and 95-98% RH using 5% NaCl solution. Test is complete after 48 hrs. Wires must remain solderable, capacitor must not be damaged.

THERMAL SHOCK, MIL STD 202, Method 107,A
Twelve parts from each lot are repetitively heated and chilled between 85°C (max operating temperature) and -55°C (min operating temperature). The capacitors are held at each extreme for 15 minutes, then quickly moved to the other. Test is complete after 5 complete cycles. Capacitance, ESR and DCL must be within initial limb.

ACCELERATED LIFE TEST
80 parts from each lot are placed in a test oven set at 85°C. Full rated voltage is applied, Test period is 1000 hrs. At the conclusion of the test, DCL is read at 85°. Parts are removed, allowed to cool to room temperature and read for capacitance, ESR and DCL. All readings must be within specified limits.

MECHANICAL SHOCK TEST, MIL STD 202, Meth 213.1
6 parts from each lot are attached to a shock load machine. Arm and absorber are adjusted to obtain specified g-force vs. time curve demonstrating 100g force over 6ms. Parts are tested 6 times in each of 3 perpendicular axes with rated voltage applied. Upon conclusion, capacitors are read and must be within initial limits.

OTHER TESTS
SWTH capacitors are also subjected to other tests designed to insure reliability and ease of use. These include: Immersion Cycling MIL STD 202, Method 104, B Sleeving Dielectric Strength, Insulation 202, 301 & 202, 302 Lead Solderability MIL STD, 202, Method 208.
